DESCRIPTION
Running
Water is a charming cabin located on the Deer River in
Dickinson
Center, about 5 miles north of St.
Regis
Falls. The
cottage sits right at the river's edge with a view of
small rapids on a scenic bend in the Deer River.
The sight and sound of the water rushing over the
rocks, viewed and heard from both inside and outside
the cottage, is so peaceful. This is truly a
beautiful place to relax and renew. It is an
ideal setting for those looking to visit the
Adirondacks who don't mind being somewhat removed from
the better known destinations. In other words, a
little off the beaten path.
The
property is a nature lover’s dream
with five acres of woods to explore, plus more
than 500’ along one of the most scenic stretches of
the
Deer
River. The
sound of water rushing over the rocks will lull you to
sleep each night and lure you out of bed each morning.
If you are looking for peace, quiet, and serenity, this is the place for you!
If you are an artist, a writer, a philosopher, a poet, a
painter, or simply a dreamer -- this is definitely
the place for you! If you are a family looking
for a "quiet" summer vacation, this is a
place where you can spend lazy days fishing and
exploring along the riverbank, and cozy evenings
making Smores and telling stories around a camp
fire.
The
cottage is very nicely decorated and features: a great
room with kitchen, dining area and living room with
TV/VCR; a sun
porch overlooking the river with white wicker
furniture; a master bedroom suite with king size bed,
small TV with VCR, and private
bathroom (shower, no tub); another bedroom with a full
bed; a third bedroom with a single bed; a second
bathroom (again, shower but not tub); and a spiral
staircase to a loft with two twin beds. (Please
note that bedroom with the full bed and the bedroom
with the single bed have an opening at the top of one
wall, so they (along with the loft) are not soundproof
from the rest of the cabin.) Outside you will
find Adirondack chairs, a riverside firepit, a hammock
with view of the small rapids, a picnic table and a
grill.
Running Water is at the end of private dead-end lane
of about
10 cottages. It
truly has a great deal of privacy that will not
disappoint you.
There
is a little swimming hole in the river directly in
front of the cabin. We “swim” in it,
although when you stand up, it is only a few feet
deep. It is also nice to sit in the calmer areas
where the water rushes over the rocks; kind of like a
natural Jacuzzi. The
river is stocked and fishing is permissible with a
license. There
are several good swimming spots in the area, including
Meecham Lake, and we
provide an information book for your use.
Bring your bikes and hiking shoes; there are
lots of trails
and quiet country roads to explore nearby.
There is one hiking trail along the Deer River (about
1/2 mile away) that you will not want to to miss!

Dickinson Center is a
few miles north of St. Regis Falls. Within 30
minutes, you will find the towns of Potsdam, Massena
and Malone. Ottawa (Canada's amazing capital
city) is less than two hours away, making for a
terrific day trip. Also nearby, you will find:
° Meacham Lake State
Campground (fee) for swimming, fishing, boat rentals
(15 minutes).
° Hiking up Debar,
Azure and St. Regis Mountains (15 to 30 minutes).
° The Santa Clara
Tract/Northern Flow River Area (15 minutes).
° A world-class 36
hole golf course in Malone (20 minutes).
° The Adirondack Park
Visitor Center in Paul Smiths (25 minutes).
° The magnificent 1000
Islands/Seaway Region along the St. Lawrence River (45
- 60 minutes), including the Eisenhower locks in
Massena and the many boat and castle tours in
Alexandria Bay.
° The quaint village
of Saranac Lake with many fine shops, restaurants, and
scenic lakes and ponds (45 minutes).
° Lake Placid, the
Olympic Village (60 minutes).
° The
Akwesasne Mohawk Casino in Hogansburg (15 minutes).
° Colonial Village Fun
Park near Potsdam (a small amusement park with
go-karts, lazer tag, mini-golf, and rides) (20
minutes).
There are excellent
boating, fishing, canoeing, and hiking opportunities
throughout the Santa Clara/St. Regis area ( http://www.adirondacklakes.org/
). Running Water is close to a great deal of New
York State forest
preserve land. The
roads going through the preserve are perfect for
leisurely biking or walking.
There are several
convenience stores and two restaurants within 10
minutes of Running Water, including the Crossroads in Moira with live entertainment
(http://www.crossroadsmoira.com)
and the scenic Deer Valley Trails in Santa Clara.
A small grocery store, gas station, and sub and pizza
shop are located five minutes away in St. Regis Falls
and a larger IGA is 15 minutes away in Brushton.
Malone, Massena and Potsdam are each about 20 to 30 minutes
away where you will find a larger shopping centers,
movie theatres and
more restaurants. There is even an indoor ice
rink at the mall in Massena! So if you don't
mind driving a bit, there is plenty to do in the
area. Or, you can kick back and do nothing at
all!
Although the
river is not deep, it can still be dangerous. We
therefore will not rent this property to anyone
with children under the age of 10.
Children age 10 and older need to be
closely supervised by an adult. Even adults should not go into the river unless
another adult is present, and no one should
go into any part of the river when drinking, or into the heavy
rapids in the center of the river at any time.
Well-behaved,
non-chewing, housebroken dogs are permitted.
Please, if your dog does not honestly fit this
description, do not ask to rent
our cottage. We have three dogs ourselves and we
know that there are some dogs who handle new places
very well, and there are others who really should not
be brought along. For those of you with
well-behaved dogs, we offer a very large outdoor
kennel with covered shelter on the property, where
dogs must be kept when you are not with them. Dogs must be kept under control at all time, and may
not be permitted to run loose on our neighbors'
properties or to bark excessively.
In
2007, the
minimum rental period for Running Water is two weeks.
Our rates are posted below.
