DESCRIPTION
Eagle's Nest Cottage, located in the Northern Adirondacks, Franklin County, Duane,
NY, is on the beautiful and serene Deer River Flow, which is fifteen miles south of
Malone just inside the northern boundary of the Adirondack Park and 1.5 miles west of
Rt-3O on CO Rd 14, aka, the Red Tavern Road. 44N39'32", 74W18'21"
Off the beaten path, this has been a destination for those who "want to get away from
it all" and enjoy nature at its best. Overlooking Furnace Mountain to the south, the
site of early 1900's attempt at iron ore mining and to the East, the majestic Debar
Mountain at the head of Deer River Flow, it gives way to the beautiful scenery
breathtaking views, and quiet serenity, often broken only by nature's creatures'
calls of the wild.
Those looking for a peaceful, quiet respite can find it here. Writers, artists,
naturalists, and dreamers have often used this area for their inspirational
recharging getaway.
Spend your lazy days boating, canoeing, fishing and swimming on a semi-private
2-1/2 mile unspoiled lake frequented by American Bald Eagles, loons, deer, an occasional
moose and other Adirondack wildlife. The site is "carved from the forest" to provide
privacy and a true Adirondack experience. Enjoy water sports, family activities, as
well as hiking, biking, bird watching, and peaceful relaxation. The adventurous can
go site-seeing in near-by towns or across the US-Canadian border or opt for an easy
day trip to the Lake Placid Olympic Venues (40 mile), Plattsburgh (55 mile),
Massena-Cornwall area (50 mile) or even Montreal (90 mile).
Hike the Elephants Head, Debar, Azure and St. Regis Mountains or view the Santa
Clara Tract Northern Flow area which are only 10 to 30 minute drives. Play golf at the
Malone-Trent Jones designed 36-hole golf course, 15 minutes away. Just outside
Malone is the Wilder Farm Museum, one of the homes of Laura Ingles Wilder. Shuffle
through the Adirondack Park Visitor's Interpretive Center's five miles of groomed
trails; enjoy their butterfly house and main building in Paul Smiths, less than a 20
minute drive. Visit the Colonial Village Fun Park near Potsdam, a small amusement
park with rides, mini golf, go-karts, and laser tag, only 35 minutes away. For those
with the gambling bug there is the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino in Hogansburg featuring
great buffets, only a 40 minute drive. Another 10 minutes toward Massena brings one
to the St. Lawrence Seaway Power Dam and the Eisenhower
Locks.

The cabin, constructed in 1996, has two bedrooms which sleep up to
five a full bed in the master bedroom and three in the children's room
(one single and a bunk). It has a fully equipped modern kitchen, bathroom with tub/shower, washer/dryer, dining area,
relaxing living room, and enclosed porch. All cooking utensils, dishes and linens are
furnished, as well as television (local channels NBC
and CBS only), DVD player, gas grill, picnic table, chairs and a fire pit to enjoy marshmallow roasting, making
smores or simply relaxing. A private dock with canoe and rowboat is available for
exploring, fishing or enjoying nature. Swimming from the dock is permitted The
cottage is fully insulated with central heat.
From the picture window in the living room or from the front porch, facing
Southwest, you can enjoy a breathtaking sunrise and the beautiful backdrop of Furnace
Mountain.
The lake is called a "flow" because any body of water impounded behind a man made
dam can be designated as a "flow". This dam, after several failures in the late 1800's
has survived since 1904, and in 2000 was resurfaced and encased in sufficient cement
to withstand years and years of North Country winter ravages. The refurbishing of
the dam has provided a very stable water level which provides excellent fishing for
small and Iarge mouth bass, northern pike and pan fish. For the history buffs, evidence of
the early attempts to mine approximately 600 tons of iron ore still remain below the dam.
For whatever pleasure you enjoy, plan to stay in peace and quiet at Eagle's Nest
Cottage on Deer River Flow in Duane, New York anytime, year round.
