DESCRIPTION
Lady
of the
Lake
"
is a charming and comfortable circa
1900 lakefront
home with water
views from
every room. Facing
south on 70` of clear, deep West Caroga Lake frontage,
with a view of the vintage Ferris wheel and carousel of
Sherman’s 1920`s amusement park in the eastern distance,
the lovingly restored three-season house is distinctively
furnished
with cottage
antiques by designer/builder owners whose other home
is featured in the international best-seller design book, California Interiors.
The
light-filled first floor features an open-plan
living room and eat-in kitchen with Brazilian cherry
hardwood floors, painted pine ceilings, and wainscoted
walls. With its congenial open floor plan, you can cook in
the kitchen while laughing with friends in the living
room, enjoying the fire, watching a movie or boats on the
lake. Yet the thoughtful layout provides surprisingly
private nooks for relaxing with a good book or a quiet
conversation.
A
large, two-level screened
porch spans the front of the house just above the
lake, creating a spectacular waterfront “great room”
with areas for dining, games and sleeping as well as relaxing in rockers, a glider and hammock.
The
living room’s
deep sofa, cushioned daybed, wicker chairs, and rockers
face a stone-backed woodstove-fireplace and an entertainment
armoire with LCD flat-screen TV with basic cable service, VCR, DVD and stereo
with attachment for your I-pod or MP3 player to the indoor, porch and
outdoor speakers. There’s a piano, a vintage dollhouse, and a collection of regional guidebooks,
cookbooks, children’s books, fiction and poetry. Firewood, videos, CD’s, games and art supplies are
provided. There’s high-speed WI-FI
internet for your laptop computer.
A
farmhouse sink and decorative wood cookstove (for display
and storage only) enhance the vintage charm of the gourmet
kitchen, modernly equipped with butcherblock counters,
dishwasher, self-cleaning electric range, refrigerator
with icemaker, filtered water, microwave, and all small
appliances. It’s well-stocked with good pots, sharp
knives, handy gadgets, spices, condiments, cleaning
supplies, attractive tableware and serving pieces. The
kitchen’s round vintage dining table seats 4-6, with tables for 4 and 8 on the porch.
There’s a picnic table on the deck, with a gas patio
heater to take the chill off late-season evenings. An "outdoor
kitchen" in the former ice house has a full-size
refrigerator, counter with sink and filtered water,
clothes dryer, and shelving for picnic and grill supplies,
next to the brick patio with gas grill with side burner.
The
bright, mirrored, first floor bathroom
has ample storage and a subway-tiled tub with shower. The
sink with filtered water is set in an antique dresser with
a secret treasure drawer for kids to find. An outdoor
hot shower with views of lake and woods is large
enough for two, with
double showerheads – a “rain” and a hand-held.
Three
upstairs bedrooms
include a master bedroom with 5 lake-view windows, king
bed
and sitting area; a bedroom with a queen
bed; and one with two
double beds. There are also twin-long
daybeds in the living room and entrance sunroom, and a
double bed with
air mattress on the porch. The beds have firm mattresses,
down duvets, hand-quilted coverlets, fleece and wool
blankets and a choice of pillows. You provide sheets,
pillowcases and towels.
Ceiling
fans
in every room including the porch circulate cool lake air.
Custom lighting on dimmer switches ranges from Italian tole
chandeliers and antique lamps to Japanese lanterns and a
disco ball. Lovely vintage
paintings of flowers, lakes and “ladies of the
lake” hang on the walls.
The
waterfront is
clear, deep and hard-bottomed, the 330 acre lake excellent
for swimming, boating, fishing, and waterskiing. Furnished
decks both at water-level and cantilevered over the
lake have beautiful views. There’s a private swimming
raft with shade umbrella on the lake. A canoe,
kayak and rowboat are provided. The dock has room for
your own small boat. A connecting channel lets you explore
East
Caroga
Lake
as
well.
The
grounds include a lawn with perennial
border and hammock.
A woodland hillside walk of 60 steps leads to parking
above for three cars on a quiet lane. Country roads take
you to nearby hiking trails that lead to hidden lakes and
panoramic views from a mountain lookout tower.
In
the midst of gorgeous
and historic countryside on the accessible southern
edge of the Adirondack Park, Lady of the Lake is in close
range to hundreds of lakes, trout streams, mountain
trails, Amish farm country, the Mohawk River Valley; the
pleasures of antiquing,
museums,
restaurants and attractions like the Baseball Hall of
Fame, Great Escape and Howe Caverns; world-class
music and dance seasons at Saratoga, Lake George, and
Cooperstown; the thoroughbred racing season at Saratoga Race Track.
It’s
five minutes to hiking and running trails, golf,
restaurants, bars, gas, stores, laundromat, post office,
chapel; 15 minutes to Gloversville, 30 minutes to NY State
Thruway, an hour to Saratoga and Albany, a bit more to
Cooperstown and Lake George, 4 hours to New York City,
Boston, Montreal and Buffalo.
