mountain and back, or on to Lake Placid, on weekends
and holidays only.
Enjoy country charm -- a Vermont Castings gas fireplace, large living room with two
couches for socializing, dining room that seats 10, sun porch - and modern
conveniences - wired and wireless Internet, cable, DVD, two VCRs, four TVs, washer/dryer, dishwasher,
well-equipped kitchen, new plumbing and heating, new thermal windows.
The house has four bedrooms and two baths, one with
Jacuzzi jets, and sleeps 9 to 10 comfortably. The downstairs bedroom has one queen bed, with easy access to a full bath and laundry. Windows on Whiteface, on Springfield Road near Fox Farm Road, is a great location in any season. Be first on the mountain: the ski center is so close, you can come home for lunch to visit with your family, or the family pet, if everyone isn't skiing. Ski packages, with savings on lift tickets, are available. Downhill trails, cross country ski trails and snowshoe trails are a mile away. Access from the house is easy, with prompt snowplowing and room to park four or more cars. The Olympic ski jumps and skating rinks in Lake Placid are 10 miles away, as are the cross country ski trails, bobsled and luge at the Verizon Center.
In summer, fall and spring, Whiteface
mountain bike trails, gondola rides, hiking and nature trails are just a mile away. The Au Sable Flume is dramatic in any season, as the white water rushes through the gorge. Fishing access to the Au Sable, a renowned trout stream, is also a mile down the road. The Wilmington town beach is about two miles away, with a beach, lifeguard, fishing and canoe access, barbecue grills and tables, and weekly summer concerts. Drive up the scenic Whiteface Highway for a dramatic view of the Adirondacks and beyond; take the elevator carved through the rock or climb up to the top yourself. The kids might want to stop at Santa's Workshop on the way down. Or just stay home, sit on the sun porch with a good book and watch the bicyclists go by as they train for the Ironman competition. We have a small library, shelves of games and kids' toys, as well as a port-a-crib, high chair, baby play seat and gates for the little ones. Family and friends can then gather for a barbecue in the backyard and eat dinner on the large deck, which has a gate. There's a fire pit in the backyard to gather around the campfire, roast marshmallows, and share stories about your day.
Wilmington has great restaurants. The Wilderness Inn and Hungry Trout, to name a few, are just a mile or so away. Or drive 10 miles on NYS Route 86 along the scenic Au Sable to shop in Lake Placid, cruise the outlet stores, go to the movies, or dine there. Enjoy Lake Placid, the cosmopolitan Olympic village, then come home to relax in Wilmington, which is tucked in the Adirondack countryside between Whiteface Mountain and the Sentinel Mountain Range of the High Peaks. You can bicycle from the house to many areas and see great mountain views, quaint farm houses, horses grazing in a field, bridges over the Au Sable, and a historic cemetery or two. Hike the High Peaks, or get in your car and go exploring, after checking out the framed wall maps and pocket maps at the house. Windows on Whiteface is a window on the Adirondacks and a great home base for a great vacation in any season.
